BSI Summer School 2011

Travel bursaries

BSI Travel Awards

Support under this scheme is available to BSI members who were elected to the Society at least twelve months before the closing date for applications, and who are in good standing with their annual subscriptions. Please note that, although the BSI endeavours to ensure that travel awards are awarded to as many applicants as possible, there will be occasions where applications are unsuccessful.

The deadline for applications is 1 May 2011.  Further information and application forms can be found on the main BSI website.

Overseas Bursaries for PhD students

A total of eight travel bursaries have been made available for PhD students from overseas, which are kindly sponsored by the School of Medicine and the i3-IRG at Cardiff University.

The following international PhD students have received bursaries and will present their research at the BSI Summer School 2011:
  1. Chetty, Shivan (Durban, South Africa)
  2. Gesheva, Vera (Sofia, Bulgaria)
  3. Laoui, Damya (Brussels, Belgium)
  4. Manohar, Monali (Bangalore, India)
  5. Mbanefo, Evaristus (Nagasaki, Japan)
  6. Nyakundi, Ruth (Nairobi, Kenya)
  7. Quimby, Kim (St. Michael, Barbados)
  8. Wehenkel, Sophie (Steinheim, Luxembourg)

Applications were judged based on the quality of the submitted abstract, the strength of the applicant's CV and supporting statements from the applicant and their head of department.  Further strong  applications were received from PhD students all over the world, including from countries such as Argentina, Belgium, China, Korea, The Netherlands and Switzerland, but unfortunately were not ranked high enough.
