Immunology in Action 2010

The deadline for entries has now passed. We thank all those who entered for their entries. The winners of the competition will be announced in the Autumn.

Immunology, the study of the ability of an organism to resist disease, is central to much of medical research, but immunology extends beyond laboratory research to clinics, public health initiatives and learning. Encompassing many aspects of our modern day lives, immunology is central to our understanding of health and diseases. Immunology in Action is an image competition whose purpose is to explore the diversity of the subject in all its forms, and the impact is has on our lives.

This competition is open to all, from school children to patients to professors. Submitted images should explore an immunological theme: whether something found down the microscope; medicines and treatment; field work, or education. However, this is not an exhaustive list. Entries will be judged on their visual impact, originality and their ability to communicate immunology. We therefore encourage you to use imaginative and innovative means to communicate the important roles of immunology.

The competition will be judged by:

Mark Henderson, science editor of The Times newspaper and author of ’50 genetic ideas you really need to know’

Tom Pringle, aka Dr Bunhead, a stand-up scientist bringing 100% pure science to classrooms, theatres and TV screens around the world. His TV works include SkyONE’s series Brainiac and the BBC show Hyperlinks.

Professor David Gray, General Secretary of the BSI. He is Professor of Immunology at the University of Edinburgh where in studies the role of B cells in the formation of memory within the immune system.
